Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves using a device with tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. The electronic device penetrates upper layers of the skin to a depth of up to 3mm creating tiny needle wounds. This stimulates the skin’s natural healing process increasing collagen and elastin production, which are essential to keeping skin look youthful and healthy. As a result, the skin becomes fuller, resulting in the reduced appearance of scars, lines, and wrinkles.
Most people will notice redness and mild swelling similar to slight sunburn for 24-48 hours. There may be slight pinpoint bleeding and/or bruising. Skin will be noticeably smoother and more radiant within a week or two. Full results will take a few months to appear.
Inflammation of the skin is very temporary and reduces greatly within a few hours. It may remain slightly pink for up to 48 hours after treatment. Using hyaluronic acid after the procedure can help reduce inflammation, and sunscreen can be used to protect the skin. Makeup use should be limited to mineral makeup.
To prevent or minimize discomfort a topical numbing agent will be applied before treatments. While the numbing cream can significantly reduce pain and discomfort, it's important to note that individual pain thresholds may vary. Some people may still experience mild discomfort or a slight sensation during the microneedling process, but it is generally well-tolerated.
Microneedling is generally safe for various skin tones, including fair, medium, and dark skin. Individuals with darker skin tones should be cautious to avoid post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Certain skin conditions, such as active acne, eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis, may make microneedling unsuitable or require specific precautions. It's essential to discuss any existing skin conditions with a professional before undergoing the procedure. Proper technique, needle length selection, and post-treatment care are crucial to successful treatments.
While each clients needs will vary, it is most often recommended to have 3 microneedling sessions consecutively several weeks apart for best results. For anti-aging, it is reccomended one or two refresher treatments per year after desired results are reached. Variables such as skin concerns, severity of the condition, and individual response to the treatment will determine how many sessions required to achieve desired results.
The entire procedure takes 30-60 minutes depending on the size of the area treated. This time includes the consultation, numbing, treatment, and aftercare information.
Yes! Microneedling greatly improves both the penetration and absorbancy of skincare products. The is one reason why it is important to use safe, high quality products following your procedure as the benefits will be amplified.
No, This type of device punctures your skin at an angle and the needles are only a third the length of a professional Microneedling pen. These needles nick the skin as it is rolled creating less of a controlled injury and potentially damaging the skin. The at-home dermarollers also increase risk of infection.
Medical microneedling is known to improve skin text texture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, regenerate tissue, improve the appearance of scars, reduce the size of pores, and reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
Collagen production increases gradually over weeks and months as the skin repairs itself. Improvements in skin texture, and reduction in fine lines and wrinkles will start to become noticeable after a few weeks, however, it's important to note that the full effects of microneedling can take several months to manifest. Final results will typically settle in after about 3 months from the final treatment.
